About Don Callejon School
Vision Statement:
Don Callejon K-8 STEAM develops students on their journey towards the SCUSD Graduate Portrait. The STEAM approach fits our desire to ignite student interest with choice and real world connections, while also emphasizing rigor in the core subject areas. Students are creative problem solvers, future ready learners, and critical thinking scholars. Social emotional learning develops students with a resilient mind/healthy body, and that are inclusive empathizers.
Mission Statement:
Implementing a STEAM experience for experiential and real world learning in all content areas. Students at DCS do the work and thinking of scientists, engineers, mathematicians, readers and writers, and more. Don Callejon STEAM builds students with deep understanding, agency, and strong connections, on their journey and toward the graduate portrait:
- Problem solvers who communicate effectively, and have a deep understanding of content.
- Independent workers who have confidence in their ability to learn. Responsible thinkers who are able to persevere through challenges.
- Respectful citizens with integrity, who are empathetic towards others.
Don Callejon STEAM is accomplished in Kindergarten through 8th grade with project based learning, rigorous workshop instruction, and a focus on the arts.
Overview
Located in the Rivermark area of Santa Clara, Don Callejon School serves students in the Santa Clara Unified School District (see detailed attendance boundaries for more information).
The $21 million, 74,500 square-foot school opened in 2006, providing students and faculty with a modernized, beautiful campus for learning and recreation.
In addition to modern classrooms, students enjoy access to a state-of-the-art Media Center and Computer Lab with both wireless and hardwired Internet access. A Multi-Purpose Building with a stage, wall tables and basketball court serves as a place for assemblies, dining, plays and sports activities.
Classrooms are located around a central courtyard which features an outdoor theater and grassy knolls. The courtyard also includes an outdoor lunch area. Outdoor play areas are divided into areas for kindergarten, elementary and middle school and are be located adjacent to a City park.
The school is named in honor of Don Callejon, former Superintendent, Boardmember and dedicated employee of Santa Clara Unified School District for 43 years.
